Everyone has a different idea of what makes a great first date. And that is what can make it so difficult to plan for. After all, women have different opinions to men, and even from person to person the ideas can change a lot. But if you are sensible and you think about the situation in advance, you can often succeed in getting the perfect date that you are both hoping for.
But surely you would need to know each other really well before you can hope to create a successful date? Actually no – so long as you aren’t on a blind date and you know a little bit about each other in advance, you can make plans that you will both like. Even if you are trying out a blind date, you can always arrange to meet somewhere neutral and then decide where to go.

A few months ago I went on a date with a guy I met online. He seemed cool on paper. Or is it on screen? Doesn’t matter since the coolness did not come across in person. First off, he was too old for me. I mean, come on. Just because it’s the best picture you’ve ever taken does not excuse the fact that it was taken in 1995. Better to post a bad, but recent picture than a great, but really old picture. At least your date won’t be disappointed. Think about it, if you actually look younger or better in person than in your picture, the date can only get better from there.
Once the shock of his age settled in I realized that he must have hired someone to write his profile as well as every email he sent me. He was not at all as funny and entertaining in person as he was in writing. Not even close enough to make me think he may just have been nervous to meet in person. Oh boy, was he boring. I wound up doing most of the talking and making most of the jokes, just to keep the conversation entertaining while I plotted my escape.
To top it off, he brought me a rose, which I find far too presumptuous on the first date – especially since it was also the first time we had met. Incidentally, many women feel the same way I do about the whole rose-on-the-first-date thing. There is often a certain expectation that goes along with a gift like that. Marketers call it reciprocity. I call it creepy. I mean, this guy didn’t even know me. He didn’t know whether I like roses (I don’t) or even whether I might be allergic to them (I’m not, but he wouldn’t know that…). And what if he hated me? He hadn’t met me yet, how did he know that my profile picture wasn’t taken 15 years and 150 lbs ago?
Of course, he thought we had chemistry. During the occasional pause in the conversation I was having with myself at Pekoe Sip House in Cherry Creek North, he would bang on about how much chemistry we had, how chemistry is so important and how we definitely for sure had chemistry. Because, he’s been out with so many women who thought they had chemistry with him and he just didn’t feel it and it was so amazing how much chemistry we had and isn’t it rare to find someone with whom you have real chemistry and wow! the chemistry we had was almost palpable.
“Oh! That’s not Chemistry,” I wanted to tell him. “That’s the heebie-jeebies.”

It is important gauge the no answer. Does she outright say no? Does she say she is busy this weekend, but maybe the next? If the girl says maybe next time, do not give up. There is still hope for you. On the other hand, if she outright says no, you may feel like running away in embarrassment, but don’t do it. Casually say “I’ll let you know if it is good.”

Do you want to ask a girl or a woman on a date? The best thing to do is ask. Just jump right in and do. With that said, you may want to think about the approach. If you are not careful, you may unintentionally pressure her into saying yes. Of course, you want to hear yes, but you want to receive a true yes, not a pressured yes.
So, how you can ask for a date without pressuring the woman?
Flirt. Flirting is one of the best ways to test the waters. If you are a public establishment, such as a bar, sporting event, or concert, you want to see if the girl is interested in you. Do this before taking the plunge. Flirting is the way to go because you can gauge her reaction. Does she seem interested? Does she flirt back? Is she trying to get away from you?
When it comes to flirting, you have many different options. Most importantly, put a smile on your face. Flirting will fall flat without a smile. Plus, a friendly smile will make it easier for women to approach you. Also, make eye contact. Whether you approach her for a conversation or flirt from afar, try to lock eyes. If you are with a group of friends, separate yourself from the crowd. Go start a conversation with her or wait until she approaches you.
Strike up a conversation. If you do not have a fear of approaching women, skip the flirting and start with a conversation. Walk up and say you noticed her from across the room. Introduce yourself and she should do the same. When having a casual conversation with a girl you just met, start out slow. Ask if she is having fun. If listening to a band at a bar, ask what type of music she likes, and so forth. If she is interested, the conversation will take off on its own.

Many guys are brave and ask girls on dates just because they want to. On the other hand, you may be looking for guidance or reassurance. If you don’t want to put your heart on the line just yet, wait and see if a girl flirts with you. If so, it is almost guaranteed she will accept your date invitation. But, wait! How do you tell if a girl is flirting with you or just being nice?
If she smiles. A smile alone is hard to determine if a girl is just being nice or flirting, but it all depends. To determine, quickly judge it. Some are expressionless smiles, where they look forced. In this instance, she is just being nice, not flirting. On the other hand, you will have excited and seductive smiles. A girl who smiles and giggles or blushes is excited about the contact made. This is flirting. A seductive smile means she has something going on beyond the scenes. Of course, you should approach her, but with a seductive smile, she may just do it herself.
If she makes eye contact. Eye contract can be tricky to determine if a girl is flirting with you. This is because we all make eye contact. We automatically scan a room when we enter it.
